Overview of TUJ and Undergraduate Programs:

The First Year Writing Program at TUJ invites applications for one or more full-time faculty positions to start in fall 2024. TUJ faculty contracts are renewable. In accordance with university standards and Japanese law, successful faculty are eligible for a continuing contract after five years.

Established in 1982, the Japan campus of Temple University (TUJ) is a full-service branch campus that educates over 3,500 students from nearly 60 countries in English in its undergraduate programs, graduate programs (law, business, graduate education), and non-degree programs (continuing education and corporate education). TUJ is expanding, financially healthy, and has just hired five new full-time faculty lines for 2022, with additional lines planned for 2023.

TUJ offers undergraduate programs to a broad mix of over 1,600 Japanese and non-Japanese degree-seeking students who will earn their degrees from Temple University through the Japan campus. Every semester, additional students from Temple’s main campus and other universities converge on our campus for a short-term study abroad experience.

In one of the most dynamic cities in the world, we offer ten full undergraduate majors ranging from Art to International Business to Psychological Studies. Our faculty and staff is international, with 37 full time faculty joined by experienced administrators and many part-time adjunct faculty from the professions, business and the arts. TUJ holds classes in the fall and spring semesters (15 weeks) and over a well-enrolled 10-week summer semester.

Overview of Positions

The First Year Writing Program invites applications for one or more full-time assistant professor position to begin in fall 2024.

The First Year Writing Program is committed to excellence in teaching and to professional development. Experienced writing instructors are sought who can fully commit to the program to carry out responsibilities primarily in teaching and curriculum development. We invite applications from individuals who are passionate about teaching writing, experienced or have expertise in teaching writing to a ELL population, knowledgeable about effective methods of teaching writing, demonstrate successful college teaching experience, and have an interest in conducting research in the field. Successful candidates will be creative, charismatic and energetic, and possess excellent communication and teamwork skills to work effectively in a collegiate setting.

  • Analytical Reading and Writing
  • Analytical Reading and Writing ESL

Other Duties

  • Create new curriculums for Introduction to Academic Discourse and Analytical Reading and Writing
  • Develop instructional materials for the courses
  • Coordinate curriculum and instruction with FYWP faculty
  • Mentor new FYWP instructors
  • Conduct workshops for FYWP and other faculty teaching writing
  • Conduct classroom research to improve student learning, and present at conferences
  • Keep up with the current literature on teaching writing and keep the program informed
  • Fulfill university service duties, particularly through participation in faculty committees

Qualifications & Experience

1. A PhD or EdD in writing studies, rhetoric and composition, applied linguistics, TESOL or a terminal degree in another closely related field

2. At least three years of successful experience teaching first-year composition in a U.S. university setting

3. Knowledgeable about contemporary approaches to teaching academic writing and experienced in effective classroom pedagogy

4. A record of scholarly publications and presentations, and an on-going research agenda
